WORK HARDER WITH POTS OF FOCUS
Want to remain focussed and get more
done throughout your day?
Need to rid yourself of tension and feel more
relaxed? Then start treating those pots and plants in the office with
a little respect.
The humble pot plant is known to boost productivity and
helps to reduce workplace stress, according to a recent study from
Washington State University.
Researchers involved in
the study found that students working in a computer laboratory that
contained plants were 12% more efficient than students performing the same
tasks in a room that was completely foliage-free.
The blood pressure of the students in the "green" laboratory was also lower
- their blood pressure rose by two points compared to four points for the"
foliage-free" students.
A group of 96 people were tested. Blood pressure and
pulse were measured before, during and after the experiment, and students
also had to identify common symbols on a computer screen by quickly pressing
the keyboard.
Reaction times for students in the laboratory with plants
were 12 per cent quicker.
"A number of studies have
documented that plants can lower blood pressure. By somehow causing us
to be more relaxed, plants help us to be more productive and focused,"
explains Washington State University horticulturist, Virginia Lohr.
